Why is it called a “cocktail”?
Ever wonder where the word “cocktail” comes from?
Well, no one knows exactly – but the stories are as
colourful as the drinks themselves!
Some say it all started at horse races, where non-thoroughbreds with perked-up tails were called “cocktails” – just like a mixed drink that isn’t pure but packs a punch. Others trace it to French soldiers who shared their coquetels (fancy wine mixtures) during the American Revolution. And rumour has it, bartenders in old New Orleans would stir drinks with a rooster feather for flair and good luck.
